Biography

Jim Welty received his BS (1954) and MS (1959) in Mechanical Engineering from OSU. He received his PhD in 1962 in Chemical Engineering. A faculty member in OSU Mechanical Engineering since 1958, he was head of Mechanical Engineering from 1970 until 1986. His scholarly achievements and publications during the past decades have significantly impacted the science, practice, and education in heat transfer. His contributions, both experimental and analytical, have become standard reference.

He has many journal articles and his three textbooks have helped students learn throughout the world. One of these, Fundamentals of Momentum, Heat and Mass Transport, was co-authored with colleagues C.E. Wicks and R.E. Wilson. He retired on December 31, 1996 after 38 years of service. Dr. Welty continues to be active as Professor Emeritus and serves on the Board of Governors of ASME.
